On a visit to his hometown of Cleveland, Steven Tatar lucked into a trove of amazing knitwear manufactured in a shuttered area mill and hit upon a plan to acquire the lot. His Brooklyn boutique is an homage to the old business: Its original fixtures are refitted for retail use (for example, sewing-table lamps hang from the ceiling), and the well-preserved garments, which come straight from the factory's archives - zigzag-pattern shells, funnel-neck cardigans, argyle sweater coats - hang from industrial steel racks. |
